Cycling is one of the cheapest, easiest and the best pollution free way of getting fit. Cycles come in a variety of sizes and shapes and require the cyclist to have basic knowledge of maintaining them off and on the road.  Specialized cycles are available for special purposes and also for different kinds of terrain.

The Road Bike: The road bike is the greyhound of the cycling world. They are light, speedy and are used for riding or rugged roads. They have 14-16 gears and no mudguards. They have long pencil thin wheels and are built with a steep frame handling that makes it easy turn by only by flicking the wrist.

The Mountain Bike: The mountain bike is the all terrain bike and has quite overtaken the road bike to become the bike everyone buys. Over 80% of bikes sold today are mountain bikes. They have chunky tires, 26-inch wheels, strong frame, flat and slightly upswept handlebars, 21-24 gears and strong brakes. These bikes are okay for cruising but are in the end too heavy for off-road riding.

The Touring Bike: The touring bike is comfy, sedate and better than a road bike for carrying luggage. These bikes have a variety of gears and have handlebars that offer various hand positions. The touring bike sales are low, yet they are the best standard bikes available and can be used for different purposes.  You may like to ride home in it or cross the desserts of Africa!

The Hybrid Bike: The hybrid bike is the cross between a mountain and a utility bike. It has the looks of a mountain bike with larger, thinner wheels. It has an upright position that makes it a good urban bike. It’s a sturdy bike that can be fitted with rack, lights and mudguards if it does not come with it. It was originally designed so that it can be ridden off the road unlike the mountain bike.

The Utility Bike: is the most popular bike. It is the cheapest and simplest form of transport. This is the age-old bike can be seen all over the world. It features mudguards, chain guards and a three-speed gear. It is heavy, often black and has rod operated brakes. The classiest and most dependable of the utility bikes are the old style roadsters, which are still being made today.

The Folding Bike: Folding bikes are designed for mixed-mode transport and are used for various purposes like traveling as luggage on train, planes or taxis. They are excellent for short trips when instead of walking one would like to ride. The cheap ones are nightmares as they are heavy, awkward and horrible to ride on. The expensive ones on the other hand, like the Brampton, are excellent

If you are a cycling fan, you have a rich variety to choose from.  So plan your trip and select the appropriate bike.  Have a comfortable trip.
